Partners in life and in practice

Clark | Richardson Architects was founded in 2010 by April Clark and Ed Richardson, who first met as graduate students at the Yale School of Architecture. Two decades later, they lead a studio whose award-winning work spans Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Alabama.

We are design thinkers. We approach every project as a set of problems to be solved with intention — understanding a client's needs and vision first, then developing elegant, buildable solutions that exceed expectations. From feasibility through construction administration, we act as the conductor coordinating every consultant so the finished building is contemporary, sustainable and resolved.

How We Work

From feasibility to final site visit

A clear, five-phase path that carries your project from first conversation through construction — organized, legible and coordinated at every step.

  1. 01

    Pre-Design

We fine-tune your program, study the site and its constraints, discuss aesthetics and gather what's needed — including surveys — to begin.

  2. 02

    Schematic Design

We develop two to three design approaches, build a 3D digital model and refine scale, massing and relationships into one clear direction.

  3. 03

    Design Development

The approved scheme becomes detailed drawings describing materiality and construction, coordinated with structural and civil engineers.

  4. 04

    Construction Documents

Full, dimensioned CAD drawings to permit and build — with support for contractor selection and permitting services.

  5. 05

    Construction Administration

During the build we clarify the drawings, answer the contractor's questions and visit the site regularly to keep the vision intact.

FAQ

Answers to common questions

We design custom residential and commercial architecture — new construction, renovations and additions, interior design and feasibility studies. Our work ranges from single-family homes to workplace, institutional and mixed-use projects.

We're based in East Austin and work throughout the greater Austin area. We've also completed award-winning projects in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Alabama, and are happy to discuss projects beyond Texas.

Our process runs in five phases: Pre-Design, Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents and Construction Administration. We guide you from program and feasibility through permitting and the build, coordinating engineers and consultants along the way.

Yes. We know Austin's code deeply and maintain established relationships with City officials. We can prepare permit-ready documents and offer permitting services to keep your project moving.

Directly and throughout. April Clark and Ed Richardson lead every project personally — you work with the architects who design your building, from the first sketch to the final site visit.

Always. We design site-responsive, energy-conscious buildings and bring green-building expertise to material selection, orientation and systems. Sustainability is a starting point, not an upgrade.
