The Five Phases of Working With an Architect

The Five Phases of Working With an Architect

One of the most common questions we hear is simply: what does working with an architect actually look like? Our process runs in five phases, each building on the last.

In Pre-Design, we fine-tune your program, study the site and its constraints and gather what's needed to begin. Schematic Design follows, where we develop two or three approaches, build a 3D model and refine one clear direction. Design Development turns that scheme into detailed drawings describing materiality and construction, coordinated with our engineers.

Construction Documents are the full, dimensioned drawings required to permit and build — and we can help with contractor selection and permitting along the way. Finally, during Construction Administration, we clarify the drawings for the builder and visit the site regularly to keep the design intact.

Throughout, our role is that of the conductor: coordinating structural, civil and mechanical engineers so the whole comes together as one organized, legible, buildable set of decisions.
