The Butterfly Residence — our renovation and expansion of a beloved Austin Mid-Century Modern home — has been recognized with a national Master of Design Award, Silver.
The project set out to honor a mid-century home's architectural heritage while answering the demands of contemporary life. A beamless vaulted addition, clad in hemlock and met by a floor-to-ceiling glass wall, extends the original house northward, while a butterfly roof channels rainwater into a sustainable drainage system and gives the home its name.
Awards are never the goal — good buildings are — but recognition like this affirms the value of restraint, craft and sustainability working together. We're grateful to the homeowners, and to photographer Chase Daniels for capturing the result so beautifully.
